This is made possible by AMOLED displays. Most of the screen remains black except for a few pixels.

This application is in beta, there are still bugs and feature gaps.

Permissions

Camera authorization
This app requires permission to use the camera to recognize the camera launch and turn off the “Always On” screen.
Telephone authorization
This app requires permission to recognize incoming calls, turn off the Always ON screen to display the incoming call screen.
Authorization to modify system parameters
This app requires permission to change system settings to change lock screen brightness.
